2009 has welcomed in a new term for the SCSS, a freshened & enthusiastic Council and on May 21st, our first Technical Talk. We were very pleased when Kevin Roden, Regional Technical Manager-Asia Pacific from Thor Specialities agreed to include Singapore in his travel schedule, more so specifically to present an SCSS Technical Talk for our members.

Kevin is a well recognised speaker at major speciality chemicals events around the world and he more than met expectations on this occasion. Kevin's talk titled “The Preservation of Personal Care Products” was very informative and comprehensive. The scope of the Technical Talk was broad starting from the theory behind how preservatives work and why personal care products need them, moving through to discuss the variety of preservatives available along with their advantages and disadvantages, through to the importance of the EU and ASEAN regulations for preservatives to the realities behind natural preservatives. It became increasingly obvious that Kevin is passionate about what he does and given more time, Kevin would have continued sharing his preservative knowledge with us for hours!

The Grand Park City Hall Hotel, provided a conducive venue and attendance for our first evening talk was very promising at over 30% of our membership present. We were very pleased with the feedback from attending members who were overheard in conversation with Kevin stating how much they enjoyed the talk and how beneficial the information presented was for them.

Following the talk, our members were invited to dine with Kevin on local delights from King Satay at colourful Clarke Quay, capping off a fine SCSS evening.
