SCSS held its second technical
talk at the PSB Academy last July 30, 2009. The event
highlighted “Exfoliation” on its relevance
as a beauty concept and its application in clinical
practice. Two (2) experts, Ms. Lynn Yap, PURAC’s
Regional Marketing Development Manager and Dr. Cheong
Wai
Kwong, Consultant Dermatologist, shared their knowledge
and expertise in this particular field.

Participants at the Talk
Exfoliation is the process
of removing dead skin cells. It is a natural desquamation
and rejuvenation process that the skin undergoes. However,
there are several options which can assist the skin
in its
exfoliation process, such as the use of chemical, physical
and thermal exfoliators. Most commonly used chemical
exfoliators are the alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) such
as glycolic and lactic acids and the beta hydroxyl acids
(BHAs) such as salicylic acid. Physical exfoliators
include the use of scrubs, abrasive pads and micro-derma
abrasion while thermal options include the use of lasers
and other light-based sources.
Ms. Lynn mentioned that
even though exfoliation has been part of a woman’s
beauty regimen for a long time, it is still relevant
in personal care and cosmetic market today. There is
continuous growth of skin care products which use chemical
exfoliators. She highlighted that there is continued
use of AHA especially lactic acid in whitening, brightening,
skin toning, anti-acne, and anti-aging products.

Ms. Lynn Yap
Dr. Cheong highlighted
that for clinical practice such as chemical peeling,
the glycolic acid, another type of AHA, is the most
frequently used exfoliating agent. This helps treat
acne and improve the skin texture.

Dr. Cheong Wai Kwong
Also, this type of treatment
can potentially restore sun-damaged skin and improve
skin texture against wrinkles, blemishes, acne scars
and blotches. Both experts agree that exfoliation, if
properly done, will help maintain skin’s youthful
glow and beauty.
Overall, the session was
well attended (~36 participants) and very interactive.
Also, the classroom type venue provided more appropriate
ambience for learning new things.
Watch out for the next
exciting technical talk from SCSS!
