Fukushima Nuclear Fallout and its Impact on the Cosmetic Industry

Download Detailed "Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident and Safety of Cosmetics Manufactured in Japan" Report
(Source: JCIA statement)
Following the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 in Japan and the ensuing nuclear fallout at Fukushima power plant, there has been some concerns about the impact on raw materials and cosmetic products manufactured in Japan.

In its statement dated March 30th, the JCIA (Japan Cosmetic Industry Association) emphasized that the risks posed to raw materials and cosmetic products are minimal and would not pose any safety or health risks to consumers. Cosmetic materials and products are manufactured in indoor plants with controlled, dust-free environments, with hardly any chance for radioactive materials from the atmosphere to enter.

With regards to water. JCIA estimates that, even if radioactive impurities were present (which is highly unlikely as deionization and purification systems are installed in all cosmetic companies) and a consumer uses such cosmetics for 1 year, the total exposure would be no more than 7.8 micro sieverts, which pose little impact on human health, comparing with our daily average exposure levels of 2,400 micro sieverts from nature. JCIA is of the view that the impact on cosmetic products and raw materials are not significant.
